For the first time in 15 years, Roy Williams will not be on the Kansas sidelines this season.
The sixth-ranked Jayhawks open the Bill Self era tonight as they host Chattanooga in the season opener as Self was brought in from Illinois to replace Williams. He won two Big Ten regular-season titles and one conference tournament championship with the Fighting Illini. He was 78-24 with three NCAA tournament appearances reaching the Regional finals in 2001 in three seasons at Illinois.
Kansas lost All-American forward Nick Collison and point guard Kirk Hinrich to the NBA. However, the Jayhawks still return a talented lineup led upfront by forwards Wayne Simien, Keith Langford and Jeff Graves.
Chattanooga head coach Jeff Lebo is in his second year at the helm. The Mocs went 21-9 last season and just missed making the NCAA tournament. Chattanooga lost in the Southern Conference tournament finals to East Tennessee State, 97-90.
The Mocs have three returning starters led by Ashley Champion. The 6-foot-6 forward averaged a team-high 15.4 points and 5.7 rebounds while shooting 57.4 percent from the field.
